8 Easy 30 Minute Family Dinners Kids Actually Eat

You spend forty minutes on something lovely, and a small person at the table pushes the plate away before tasting it.

I’ve been on the receiving end of that look more times than I’d like to admit.

Now I cook from a short list of dinners that come back empty, and I’ve stopped taking the rest personally.

Every one here is on the table in half an hour.

1. Sheet Pan Nachos

Nachos for dinner feel like breaking a rule, which is exactly why kids love them.

Tortilla chips get layered on a sheet pan with seasoned ground beef, black beans, homemade nacho cheese sauce and shredded cheese, then baked until everything melts.

Tomato, green onion, cilantro, pickled jalapeños and sour cream go on after.

Thirty minutes, eight servings.

Put the jalapeños on just one corner so the kids have a safe zone.

2. Sloppy Joe Meatball Subs

Two kid favorites in one sandwich, a meatball sub made with sloppy joe sauce.

Small meatballs made from ground beef and pork sausage simmer in a can of Manwich, then go into sub rolls under melted mozzarella.

About thirty minutes for six subs.

Toast the rolls before filling them so the sauce doesn’t soak straight through.

Frozen meatballs work if you want to cut the time down even more.

3. Spaghetti Carbonara

Carbonara is basically bacon and cheese spaghetti, which is probably why it goes over so well with kids.

Crisp guanciale, eggs, egg yolks, Parmigiano Reggiano and starchy pasta water make a silky sauce with no cream at all.

It takes twenty minutes and serves four.

Toss the eggs in off the heat so they turn creamy without scrambling.

Bacon or pancetta works fine if you can’t find guanciale.

4. Cheesy Chicken Broccoli Rice Skillet

A homemade version of the boxed cheesy rice, and it uses shortcuts on purpose.

Cooked chicken, frozen broccoli and cooked rice go into a quick cheddar sauce made with butter, flour, milk, broth and a little Dijon.

Thirty minutes, six servings.

Microwave rice pouches and a rotisserie chicken are what make it fast.

Grate the sharp cheddar yourself, because pre-shredded cheese is coated to stop clumping and doesn’t melt as smoothly.

5. Air Fryer Parmesan Chicken Tenders

Chicken tenders are the safest bet on this list, and these take eighteen minutes.

The coating is almond flour and grated Parmesan with garlic salt and paprika, so they’re keto and gluten-free without anyone at the table noticing.

Don’t stack them in the air fryer basket, or the coating steams and goes soft.

Honey mustard or ranch for dipping.

6. Air Fryer Fish Sticks

Homemade fish sticks taste nothing like the frozen box, and they’re an easy way to get fish onto a kid’s plate.

Strips of cod or mahi-mahi go through flour, egg and seasoned breadcrumbs, then into the air fryer until golden.

Thirty minutes, four servings.

Leave out the cayenne for younger kids.

Tartar sauce and lemon wedges on the side, or ketchup if that’s what gets them eaten.

7. Creamy Chicken Spaghetti

Chicken spaghetti is a Southern classic, and this version comes together in half an hour.

Chicken breast, red bell peppers, mushrooms and onion go into a creamy sauce with spaghetti and a layer of melted cheddar on top.

It serves four.

Chop the mushrooms small if anyone at your table picks them out.

8. Beef and Bean Burritos

Five ingredients and fifteen minutes, and the kids can build their own.

Seasoned ground beef and refried beans get wrapped in tortillas with cheddar, and that’s the whole recipe.

It makes eight burritos.

Wrap extras in foil and freeze them, since they reheat well for lunches.

Salsa and sour cream on the side.

Tips for Feeding Picky Eaters

Serve sauces, toppings and anything spicy on the side so everyone builds their own plate.

Put one food you know they’ll eat on the table at every meal, even if it’s just bread.

Kids often need to see a new food many times before they’ll try it, so keep offering it without pushing.

Letting them help with one small job, like sprinkling cheese, makes them more likely to eat the result.

Notes on Getting Dinner Out Fast

A rotisserie chicken and a bag of frozen vegetables cover half the work on a busy night.

Read the recipe once before you start and get the water boiling or the oven heating first.

Set the table while things cook, which saves more time than you’d think.
