P and B Minimal Pairs: Word Lists and How to Use Them
P and B minimal pairs are word pairs that differ only in the /p/ and /b/ sounds — pat/bat, pin/bin, cap/cab. They isolate the one feature that separates the two consonants, which makes them the standard drill for learners whose first language does not treat /p/ and /b/ as different sounds. Word lists by position follow, along with the part most teachers get wrong: at the start of a word, the cue is not voicing.

The contrast sits between vowels. English does not have many of these, but the ones it has are clean.

What is the difference between P and B?
Both are bilabial plosives: the lips close, pressure builds, the lips release. The place of articulation is identical, so there is nothing to move and nothing to show in a mirror. That is what makes the pair harder to teach than something like /s/ and /ʃ/.
The phonemic difference is voicing. /b/ is voiced, /p/ is voiceless. But the practical difference depends on where in the word the sound sits, and treating it as one rule everywhere is the usual mistake.
At the start of a stressed syllable, the cue is aspiration, not voicing. English /p/ in pin is released with a puff of air, [pʰ]. English /b/ in bin has no puff, and its vocal fold vibration often does not begin until the vowel does. So a native listener separating pin from bin is mostly hearing the puff. A learner who produces an unaspirated /p/ — which is the normal /p/ in Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin and many other languages — will be heard as saying bin, no matter how confident they are that they said pin.
At the end of a word, the cue is the length of the vowel before it. The vowel in cab is noticeably longer than the vowel in cap, and final /b/ in English is often devoiced anyway. Teach cab as a longer a, not as a buzzier b. Learners who try to add voicing to the final consonant usually end up adding a vowel after it instead — “cabuh” — which is a new problem.
Between vowels, voicing works as advertised. Rapid and rabid really do differ by vocal fold vibration, and a hand on the throat will show it.
Two checks that work in class
The paper strip. Hold a strip of thin paper a couple of centimetres in front of the mouth. Say pin and the strip moves. Say bin and it does not. This is the single most useful demonstration for the initial contrast, and it gives the learner feedback without you having to judge.
Hand on the throat. Fingers on the larynx, hold a long /b/ against a long /p/, then run through the medial pairs. This works well between vowels and poorly at the start of a word, so introduce it second and say why.
One thing to avoid: do not drill /p/ inside s-clusters. English /p/ in spin, spot and spy is unaspirated, and to many learners it genuinely sounds like /b/. Those words teach the wrong lesson at this stage.
Which learners need this contrast
Arabic speakers. The highest priority group. Most Arabic dialects have no /p/ at all, so /p/ is heard and produced as /b/ — the standard example is Pepsi produced as “Bebsi.” Work initial position first, with the paper strip, and expect the perception work to take longer than the production work.
Spanish, Italian and French speakers. These languages have both sounds, so the phonemic distinction is not the problem. The problem is that their /p/ is unaspirated, which English ears read as /b/. The fix is not “learn a new sound,” it is “add the puff.” Spanish speakers also produce /b/ as a soft fricative between vowels, which affects the medial pairs.
Mandarin speakers. Mandarin stops contrast by aspiration rather than voicing, so initial position is usually intelligible without much work. Final position is the real difficulty, because Mandarin syllables do not end in stops at all: cap/cab, rope/robe and rip/rib are the pairs to drill.
Korean speakers. Korean has a three-way stop system in which voicing is not phonemic, so pin/bin is genuinely unstable. Korean final stops are also unreleased, which makes cap/cab hard both to hear and to say.
Young children in speech therapy. Substituting /b/ for /p/ is a voicing error rather than a placement error, and it is treated with the same contrast drills but usually alongside other voicing pairs. The velar equivalent runs on the same principle — see K and G minimal pairs.
How to run the drill
Listening first. Say one word from a pair, learner points to the picture. If they cannot do this reliably, production practice will not help, because they are not yet hearing two categories.
Then listening with your mouth covered. No lip-reading, no watching for the puff. If accuracy falls off a cliff, the perception is not there yet.
Then production with the paper strip. Ten trials per word, one pair at a time, initial position only. Move on at roughly 80% accuracy.
Then the confusion drill. The learner says a word, you point to the picture you actually heard. When they say pear and you point at the bear, the correction is a consequence rather than a comment, and it transfers better than telling them.
